How Google print worksGoogle now provides a service called GooglePrint or Google Print that allows people to search for content within printed as opposed to electronic books. The process is currently limited to physical books only and requires that a copy of the book to be indexed is scanned in by Google. This must be a time-consuming and expensive process, particularly for large volumes. Google Print potentially offers authors a new way of monetizing their content coupled with a free means of promoting their book. How it worksAnyone using Google to search for information that lies within a scanned book will see a list of search results as usual, but some of the results will be highlighted with a "Google colors" graphic to show that the information is within a book:
If you click on the link you go to a specially designed page within Google's own site that shows you the page within the book where your search term lies. You also see links to online bookstores, the book's ISBN, information about the author etc. (For an example click on this link Google Print example) So what's in this for authors?Within the pages about the book there will be some AdSense ads and Google shares the revenue from these with the author so, once again, people who write about valuable topics will potentially get high value clicks from high value ads that run alongside the information provided by Google as part of the Google Print service. Furthermore, because the system works on books already in print, it provides an income stream, although probably quite small, derived from work already done (once you've sent your book off.) Electronic books - the future. At the moment Google is not focusing on ebooks but in the future it seems likely that they will bring ebooks into the fold. Once they do that, all those free pdf reports that proliferate could become valuable to their authors in a completely new way particularly if hyperlinks remain intact and functional.
