AdSense is a great way of starting

How you get paid

There's nothing complex about the AdSense basics:

• You run a website
   
• You sign up for Google's AdSense program
   
• You post AdSense ads on your site
   
• You get traffic
   
• This traffic clicks on the ads
   
• Google charges the advertiser
   
• You get checks from Google
  
• Pay the checks in (I'll tell you what to do if you don't have a US Dollar account)

Maximising AdSense Income

However, maximising your AdSense income is what The Definitive Guide to Google AdSense is all about.  I tell you, joining the program is not hard (I'll walk you through the process in detail AND tell you what to do if you get rejected - many sites do but you'll find out what to do if yours is. Making serious money is a very different issue though.  For a start, a website on its own won't make you a bean unless it gets traffic. (See Chapters 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29 of The Definitive Guide to Google AdSense).

The amount you earn per click on an ad varies enormously from a couple of cents (oh dear!) up to many dollars (Whoopee!) but you can control how valuable these clicks are if you know the secrets (Chapter 22, Chapter 30)

Seriously, when I was experimenting with my own sites and using detailed tracking tools (Chapters 33, 34) I discovered one fact that drove my earnings up by 300%.  (Read Chapter 30 VERY carefully).

The AdSense Income Equation

I reverse-engineered the AdSense Income Equation to pull out all those factors that effect exactly how much you get paid.  Then I worked out how to maximise all these factors, one by one.
