How to get more traffic

Traffic generation techniques

There is no doubt that one of the best ways of getting traffic is to adopt the combined approach of

  1. Always giving people a Reason and a Reminder to Return, and

  2. Putting in place Traffic Generation systems.

The first method gives you a philosophy: never just quote your website address or just put it in a link.  ALWAYS tell people how they will benefit from the visit.  People have inertia, even when it comes to clicking a weblink.  Give them something to help them over the inertial barrier.

Traffic generation systems require more work.  We touched on viral marketing as one lazy method but you need to get your name and site about: go and visit those forums and contribute.  Work on those web pages to build a larger site.

But most of all keep steadily at it, a little bit at a time.

For example, I recently was invited to contribute a blog on e-consultancy.com - because months earlier I had signed up to their mailing list and responded fast to an invitation they sent to everyone to contribute to a new blog section.

I then had to write a number of short articles to demonstrate that I could say something interesting and useful more than once!

I passed that qualification step and now try to write 3 or 4 short notes a week and most times I manage to find some excuse to link back to one of my sites.  This generates visits, and it also over time will help my ranking with the search engines.

Where do you start?

I would start building an autoresponder email course - just like I do for this website. But note too how my ebook is a traffic generator in its own right.  Can you use a similar approach?
